Complex and lean or lean and complex? The role of supply chain complexity in lean production

چکیده
Research on Lean indicates that its association with performance improvement, although compelling, is not uniformly positive. Prior researchers have posited plants implementing may become too lean or only implement selected aspects without fully embracing Lean’s synergistic prescriptions. We explore another potential reason for lower-than-expected sometimes associated Lean: supply chain complexity. Using survey data from 209 manufacturing in seven countries across three industry groups, we test two alternative mechanisms by which complexity influence improvements expected moderation and mediation. find that, while has very little moderating impact this relationship, it mediates the relationship between performance. While majority of significant mediating effects are negative, serving as a tax effect performance, our analysis reveals some positive effects, highlighting difference dysfunctional strategic Our results indicate managers should reduce internal upstream to improve In particular, reducing number inputs plant must manage widest largest realizing Further, highlight importance complexity, developing strategies accommodate

The paper presents the problems with integration of the companies within the supply chain. Usually the separate actions are undertaken by the companies to implement lean tools for production systems and external logistics processes. This situation leads to minor results or moving the costs between production and logistics processes instead of reduction. The purpose of the paper is to present th...

How did Toyota achieve its success? It all started with the first President of Toyota Motor Corporation, Kiichiro Toyoda, who set up the company's objective “to use small lot size with cheaper vehicles to compete with the cost of American motor companies by continuously reducing cost through waste elimination”. The second president, Eiji Toyoda, went further to improve Toyota's manufacturing pr...
متن کاملLean Supply Chain Performance Evaluation Method
Increasing global competitiveness has forced manufacturing organizations to produce highquality products quickly and at competitive prices which can only be achieved thorough continuous improvements techniques. In this paper, we propose a fuzzy based performance evaluation method for lean supply chain. To understand the overall performance of cost competitive supply chain, we investigate the al...
